Environmental Physiology

In the field of environmental physiology our support services enable individual and squads of athletes to prepare for extreme environmental conditions, whether hot, cold, or at altitude. Central to our facilities are our purpose built environmental chamber that can control ambient temperature (-20 to +50 ° C) and relative humidity (20 to 95%) and altitude chamber that can alter circulating oxygen levels (down to 11% from 20.7% sea level), thereby simulating different climates and altitude conditions. We can provide heat acclimation strategies, pre-cooling manoeuvres and altitude training to help athletes with their preparation for and competition in hot, humid or hypoxic conditions.

When exercising in these conditions we can accurately monitor core, muscle and skin temperature and calculate sweat rate to help optimise hydration levels. We can also monitor oxygen saturation levelsGuidance on fluid replacement strategies can also be given specific to the needs of different sports or activities.

For athletes intending to train or compete at altitude we can offer guidance on appropriate altitude training methods and if ascending higher into the mountains, we can offer expedition advice and how to prevent altitude illnesses. User-friendly guidelines can be provided for whatever the condition to be experienced in order to optimise performance and reduce the likelihood of succumbing to a heat or cold-related injury or altitude-related illness. With a history of working with able-bodied and disabled athletes in preparation for major championships, we are able to integrate appropriate strategies into existing training programmes.
