Environmental and Hypoxic Physiology Laboratory Day
£650
An environmental heat chamber laboratory experience whereby pupils split into groups and subjects undergo precooling protocol (ice-jackets, fully body cold water immersion, hands and feet immersion and a control group) prior to exercising in the environmental chamber at 35 degrees and 80% humidity.
Heart rate, thermal sensation, skin temperature, RPE and tympanic temperature are all measured throughout the protocol so that intergroup comparisons can be made. Subjects are then monitored in a recovery period to ensure values return to normal baseline values.
Hypoxic Chamber
The high altitude or hypoxic chamber is used primarily with elite athletes to acclimate the body increasing its affinity for oxygen and subsequent performance at sea level.
The hypoxic chamber allows pupils to experience sea level and high altitude conditions (3500m) whilst exercising at varying intensity levels so they can compare the stresses placed on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Measurements include, blood gas saturation levels, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion and blood lactate levels.
