Student views - Hospitality
Nicola Smith
International Hospitality Management BA(Hons)
Second year
From the instant warm welcome and friendliness I received on my first open day, I automatically knew the University of Brighton was for me. The thing I love most about the university is the connection between lecturers and us as students; we are able to go to them for work and also personal issues.
Facilities and modules
The facilities for hospitality management are amazing. There are really good research facilities such as the Culinary Arts Studio where we manage a restaurant in two different ways: silver service and a quick service style.
You get to study a wide range of modules such as marketing and accounting as well as your core hospitality modules. This gives a good overview of running a business as a whole which is what I want to do when I graduate.
Placement year
The best thing about studying here is that you get the opportunity to do a placement year, which I will be going to do in June; I am flying out to America to work in a hotel for a year taking on some managerial roles, learning all the different aspects of the running of a hotel,
I have also worked for Disney in Florida in the summer and Ascot racecourse alongside my degree.
If you are thinking about studying here, you won’t regret it. It has been the best two years ever; from the university work to the social life I would not change a thing.

William Norris
(Managing Director and Owner of William Norris & Company)
Having graduated in 1993 with International Hospitality Management with French BA(Hons), I am now the managing director and owner of William Norris & Company.
As a company, we pride ourselves on having a portfolio of high profile and prestigious clients, building a solid reputation as providers of stylish and sophisticated events across Europe.
I chose to study this course at the University of Brighton as it provided me with the opportunity to capitalise on my previous experience gained within the restaurant business. It gave me an insight into the world of hospitality and the service industry, and in particular, the business, marketing and accountancy elements provided me with inspiration for starting my own business.

Dave Berry
When applying for universities I looked into their reputation and location, and the University of Brighton Eastbourne campus seemed perfect. I loved the fact it was by the sea and that all the staff and students seemed so happy and friendly.
After attending their open day my decision was made and I didn’t even visit my other university choices.
Whilst studying I learned to become more self-confident, self-aware, self-motivated, and generally learn more about myself as a person and what I wanted from life. I now have a catering management job and have also launched my own street dance company with the knowledge gained from my degree.
I would whole-heartedly recommend the University of Brighton. The staff are passionate, friendly, intelligent and down to earth.
