Why study hospitality?

  • Leads to a wide range of careers
  • Many graduates own their own company
  • Join an expanding industry with opportunities worldwide

‘Hospitality’ – it is such a vast and diverse industry there is something to suit everyone. We have all eaten out in a restaurant at some stage but just consider the range of eating options available from fast food to fine dining to food from every corner of the world and some even arrives at your table on a conveyor belt!

Then there is the hotel side of the industry, 5 star resort properties to small intimate townhouse hotels and B&Bs each offering a unique set of challenges to the management, and licensed retail trade too, the bars, pubs and clubs; a rapidly changing and expanding industry with such dilemmas as the smoking ban and recent changes to the licensing laws.

Events, conferences and weddings are a very popular choice for graduates with many owning their own companies. These combine the challenges of feeding and accommodating people as well as logistical issues such as how do you provide food and drinks for thousands of people attending a music festival in the middle of a field?

But what about the rest of the industry? Have you ever considered the hospitality provisions in retail outlets, offices, schools, hospitals, prisons and offshore refineries. Then there are all those people on the move who require accommodation and food and drink whether it is on a cruise, plane or train. What else: coffee shops, takeaways, kiosks, mail order food, sporting venues, the arts, leisure and museums, the opportunities are endless.

So why should you study International Hospitality Management?  – well, because you want to, I mean really  really want to. The industry is crying out for people with a real passion to make a difference within the industry.  Also a passion for working with and managing people, see how many times that word comes up: it’s a ‘people’ industry. Yes it can be long hours; yes, it can be hard work too. However, if you want a career where no two days are exactly the same, you can meet guests from all over the world, you can travel and really make someone’s holiday or evening out that bit more special then Hospitality is right for you.
