Swimming and water-based activities
Swimming and water-based activities at the University of Brighton, Chelsea School, offer a wide range of experiences for students of the University. From a competitive perspective the swimming and triathlon teams are coached by a national level coach and have members who compete at national and international levels. The highlight of the short course season saw a first year student taking silver in the BUSA finals.
The Active Student project encompasses swimming and employs twelve year 3 and 4 QTS students to teach primary school children in the pool on site at the University. The teaching is undertaken by students who have taken ASA swimming qualifications whilst in the first two years of their studies, an opportunity that is extended to all students. In addition to this a children's swim school is based at the University and provides numerous work placement opportunities for suitably qualified individuals.
Within the course itself all students will study swimming and water- based activities at levels 1 and 2, and will have the opportunity to take a level 3 module which addresses teaching of advanced level performers. Throughout the modules there are numerous opportunities for self-improvement of strokes, peer appraisal, ICT- based stroke analysis (through Silicon coach), as well as chances to work across the teaching spectrum from key stage 2 to AS and A2.
