Laboratories

Our new and state-of-the-art laboratories provide you with the ultimate learning environment for your sports studies.

The Sport and Exercise laboratories at the University of Brighton have recently been reaccredited by BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences) and used by elite athletes in preparation for competition.

The accreditation means that the facilities are of the required standard for the activity undertaken, and exercise testing and related measurements are conducted in accordance with appropriate protocols and adhere to safety considerations.

Over the past year the laboratories have appeared in BBC Horizon, BBC Bang Goes the Theory, BBC South East and more recently filming for Sky TV.

The laboratories have also been used to test out products for exercising and weight loss, prepare athletes for the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as numerous high profile research projects.

The laboratories at the university include: exercise physiology laboratories, environmental chamber, hypoxic chamber, biomechanics laboratory and biochemistry laboratory.

Biomechanics laboratory

Our biomechanics lab is equipped a three-dimensional Motion Analysis System, video analysis software packages and three force platforms. Find out more about our Biomechanics laboratory.

Exercise physiology laboratories

Aerobic, power and strength assessments are carried out in this laboratory.  Equipment includes treadmills, cycle ergometers, off line or breath-by-breath gas analysis, blood analysis of lactic acid and glucose dynamometers and isometric strength rigs, a jump mat and Wingate systems. Find out more about our Physiology laboratories.

Environmental chambers

Our environmental chamber can control ambient temperature (-20 to +50°C) and relative humidity (20 to 95 per cent), thereby simulating different climates.  Our hypoxic chamber can allow exercise to take place in a reduced oxygen environment, thereby simulating the effects of high altitude. Find out more about our Environmental laboratories.

Biochemistry laboratory

The laboratory offers facilities for detailed analysis of human blood and tissue samples.  Find out more about our Biochemisty laboratory.
