Frequently asked questions
Will I be paid on placement?
Most placements are generally salaried. Salaries vary from employer to employer depending on the degree of responsibility involved in the job and the location you will be working in.
When will I start?
Some employers will have a specific date for placements to start, if not you should arrange the start date with the employer. Bear in mind that you need to spend 48 weeks on work placement to comply with degree regulations. If you add four weeks of holiday it will take 52 weeks minimum to complete your placement. This means you should start your placement at least a year before the first day of your next year at university. Often students who take overseas placements use the gap between completing their placement and the start of their final year to go travelling.
Will I need to do any academic work?
While on placement you are expected to produce a work-related project of up to 10,000 words. This replaces your final year dissertation and gives you exemption from a double module in the final year.
Will I have to pay fees?
Fees for placement in 2011 and 2012 are at a much reduced rate. The cost of the placement year will be £750 for UK and EU students, £1760 for international students. For this you will receive the support of the placement office throughout your placement.
Can I still use the library or studentcentral?
You will still be a registered student and will able to use all the university facilities and to claim student rates for public transport.
