About research study
Our research programmes represent the traditional route to gaining a research degree, which consists of submitting a written thesis and an oral panel examination (the viva) at the end of the study period.
If you would like to take up the challenge and join our growing number of research students please get in contact with us to discuss your research.
Your supervision team
All research students are supported by two supervisors one of which is referred to as the lead supervisor and is administratively responsible for your progress.
Regular contact with your supervisor
The student/supervisor relationship is pivotal to the research process and we strongly advise you to keep in regular contact with your supervisors.
No two supervisory arrangements are the same and it is up to you and the supervisors to negotiate and agree a satisfactory level of support depending upon the stage you have reached.
Conference attendance and submission of papers
All our research students are encouraged to present papers about their research at relevant conferences both in the UK and where appropriate overseas.
Publications
We are proactive in encouraging you to publish appropriate parts of your research in key refereed journals or as chapters forming part of edited texts.
Until graduation, such publications are normally in joint authorship with a member of the supervisory team.
Seminar series
You will present work in progress papers to the wider school community of both staff and postgraduate students via research seminars.
Such sessions provide an invaluable learning experience for testing out ideas, formulating theoretical propositions and defending intellectual ideas and concepts.
University Research Training Framework (URTF)
Attendance of URTF modules is free to you as a research student. The URTF offers five generic modules including the core module ‘overview of research methods’.
It is delivered through five double workshops aiming to provide an introduction to topics such as epistemology, research environment, and professional skills.
It also provides a chance to meet other research scholars. Undertaking and completing a structured programme of research skills training will complement and extend the core MPhil/ PhD research activities and expose you to a wide range of research positions and methods.
Completing the appropriate number of modules will help you gain additional qualifications in the form of a certificate or diploma in research methods.
Research Student Development Programme
The university has developed an exciting programme of workshops, which cover all aspects of research methodology and transferable skills training, in line with vitae’s researcher development framework.
The programme includes workshops run by the Brighton Doctoral College, as well as those organised by the departments of Information Services and Economic and Social Engagement, in order to fully meet all of your training requirements.
