Background
Jem joined the School of Applied Social Science in 2002. He is a registered social worker with experience in statutory settings with older people, disabled people and those with chronic health conditions. Jem qualified in social work at the University of Warwick, after moving on from positions in democratic services and policy planning in local government. Jem has also taught English in Taiwan and Thailand.
Teaching
At University of Brighton, Jem is currently Course Leader for MSc Social Work and is centrally involved in the university's Continuing Professional Development provision for qualified Social Workers in Adult Services.
Jem coordinates and teaches on various modules across qualifying and post-qualifying social work education. His particular areas of interest include social work and ageing, better practice with lesbian and gay service users and global social work perspectives.
Research interests
Jem is currently undertaking research which seeks to understand the experiences and perspectives of social workers who qualified in the Philippines and moved to England to practice. He aims to explore the impact of such 'international practice’ upon perceptions of professional purpose and identity and also to explore notions of transferability of knowledge, skills and values in social work.
