Research interests
James's research interests are in social movements and in the relationships human beings have with their environment and the universe in general. His own research has looked at activists campaigning to promote the human exploration, development and settlement of outer space. His ethnographic research has drawn extensively on psychoanalytic theory. In collaboration with Peter Dickens, he has developed a broader account of the relationship that human beings have with the universe, both historically and in contemporary society. This draws on and extends themes from environmental sociology and the sociology of science, and also retains a focus on the self and on social movements.
Profile
James first enrolled as an undergraduate at the University of Essex in 1998. After completing his bachelor's degree in sociology he stayed on to take a master's degree in sociological research, and then a PhD in sociology. His doctoral research was a study into 'pro-space activism' supervised by Dr Eamonn Carrabine. He was awarded his PhD in 2006 after being examined by Prof Kevin Hetherington. James was a teaching fellow at Essex for a year after that, teaching core sociological theory and research methods, before moving to take up his appointment in Brighton in 2007.
