Profile
Kepa joined SASS in September 2006. He is a former nurse with work experience in acute units both in Spain and the UK . Kepa left nursing to take a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Health Studies at the University of Central Lancashire , followed by an MPhil in Research Methods/Latin American Politics at the University of Glasgow and a PhD that examined the role of intellectuals in Cuban society. Since then, Kepa has gained research experience in various areas of public policy.
He first worked as a researcher for a HEFCE-funded project to explore widening participation in higher education, followed by a two-year, national evaluation of the Connexions Service for young people at risk. Kepa has combined these posts with periods of lecturing at the Universities of Wolverhampton, Nottingham and Chester.
Since arriving to Brighton, Kepa has pursued mainly his international/global interests, spending a year living in Bolivia working with NGOs. His book Bolivia: Refounding the Nation, explores the political and policy challenges being currently faced by Bolivia and develops themes on social exclusion, recognition, indigenous understandings of wellbeing, political participation and south-south forms of solidarity networks. In addition to his academic work, Kepa contributes critical commentary and analysis to online magazines, including New Left Project, Kaos en la Red and Rebelión.
