Research interests
- User involvement and user movements, public participation, citizenship and new forms of democratic practice. I am extending this work both conceptually and empirically to draw connections between care, social cohesion and social justice.
- Policy and practice interfaces: community care, health policy and social exclusion. Policy evaluation in these areas.
- Lay care, carers and carers movements.
- Mental health: in particular issues relating to gender, the experiences of mental health service users/survivors, and mental health law.
Download 'A Final Brick in the Wall? A History of the Nottingham Advocacy Group' (200kb pdf) - Ageing and older people, in particular older people's participation, wellbeing, prevention
Current projects
- Older people and wellbeing, a collaborative project with Age Concern Brighton, Hove and Portslade (see project website)
- Evaluation of the Lifelines project – a project focussing on prevention and older people
- Evaluation of the carers' breaks project in east Sussex: support and respite for carers of people with dementia
- Study of advocacy in West Sussex
I am also in the process of co-editing a book called Critical Perspectives on User Involvement with Phil Cotterell, University of Southampton, to be published by Policy Press.
And I have started work on a book called Care in Everyday Life: an ethic of care in practice, also for Policy Press. This book will argue for the importance of care as a value and practice across a range of contexts and relationships. It will apply an analysis based in a feminist ethics of care to circumstances in which care has typically been recognised as a key value: eg care for children, for people who are ill or frail, and to circumstance in which its relevance is more rarely considered, eg friendship relationships and stranger relationships. It will identify the significance of care in the context of politics and policy making and offer an imaginary of a social policy based more firmly than is currently the case in political and personal values of care.
Teaching
- I co-ordinate the Participation and Democracy PG module
Profile
After working in research and development posts in local government social services, I have worked at the Universities of Birmingham, Leeds and Sheffield. I have worked primarily as a researcher in the areas outlined above and have had major responsibilities for research management and development. In addition to the substantive areas of research interest I have also been involved in developing approaches to collaborative research with service users and have an interest in narrative research methods. I teach postgraduate courses and supervise research students.
Additional roles
Member of the editorial board of the Journal of Social Policy, of Lavoro Sociale (Social Work), and the editorial collective of Critical Social Policy.
