Sue Balloch joined SASS as a Reader in 1999, having worked previously at the OECD in Paris, Hong Kong University, Goldsmiths College, the Association of Metropolitan Authorities and the National Institute for Social Work. She was awarded a personal chair in Health and Social Care in 2001
Sue was Director of the Health and Social Policy Research Centre from 2002 to January 2008 and an Academic Director of the Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp). Following her retirement in 2008 she has continued to supervise PhD students, contribute to the Research Group on Ageing and mentor practitioners carrying out research through Making Research Count. She is currently the external adviser on social work for the Open University. She is also a trustee of Counsel and Care, a charity providing advice and support to older people and their carers, and a Friend of Chailey Heritage.
Sue's interests focus on user empowerment, social exclusion, citizenship, partnerships, participatory research and evaluation. She is the co-author of key texts on the social services workforce (1999), partnership working (2001) evaluation (2005) and care, community and citizenship (2007) all published by The Policy Press.
