International students

English language support

We offer free English language tuition to all our international and EU students in their first year of study.

Classes in the English Language Support Programme (ELSP) are held weekly on each of our main campuses. The programme can help you to:

  • complete written assignments
  • develop seminar skills
  • understand lectures in English
  • develop the spoken communication skills needed for everyday life.

'Self-access' language learning facilities

We also have a number of 'self-access' language learning facilities, which we encourage students to use to further develop their skills. These are located in the Open Learning Centre in the Checkland Building on the Falmer campus.

Improve your English before you begin your studies

The university runs a range of English courses that you can take before you commence your academic studies in Brighton.

For certain postgraduate courses, you can also take our extended masters route, which aims to to help you build up a strong academic vocabulary that specifically relates to your masters subject before you start your course. Find out more about the extended masters route in our school.
