Peter Squires, Professor of Criminology and Public Policy, has recently been appointed to sit on one of the panels for the national Research Excellence Framework (REF), alongside five other University of Brighton academics.
Professor Julian Crampton, the university's Vice-Chancellor, said: "This is a great personal achievement and well-deserved recognition for all those selected.
"This also confirms Brighton's position as one of the leading research universities of the future."
Panel chairs and panel members, chosen by the four higher education funding councils for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, are responsible for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.
Professor Bruce Brown, the university's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, is one of the REF's four main panel chairs.
Professor Brown said: "I am delighted by the panel appointments which give due recognition to the research achievements of our colleagues and the rapidly growing research environment throughout our university.
"This is a significant marker for the University of Brighton that places us in the top quartile of universities in terms of numbers of academics appointed to REF panels."
