Dr Katherine Johnson, principal lecturer in the School of Applied Social Science, will take part in the ESRC Festival of Social Science event 'Pride after Prejudice' in Bristol on 31 October 2011.

'Pride after Prejudice' is an exciting one-off event that aims to give young LGBT people the chance to listen to four innovative and provocative speakers addressing the issues affecting today's LGBT youth. From bullying and discrimination to homelessness and mental health issues, the speakers and the audience will discuss the pride of the LGBT community and the problems they face in search of recognition and acceptance.

Katherine is a researcher in social and critical psychology who has conducted extensive work into the issues regarding LGBT suicidal distress and mental health. Katherine is a member of the Brighton and Sussex Sexualities Network and has been involved in two LGBT community-based research projects regarding LGBT suicidal distress. The results of her study have been largely diffused through the photography project Focusing the Mind that was exhibited during the annual Pride Festival (July 2008) and Diversity and Equality week (December 2008). She is the author of a forthcoming book on Sexuality and the Psychosocial Subject. Katherine teaches across the undergraduate and postgraduate social science programme, and is coordinator of the school's postgraduate degrees.

Katherine will be joined at the event by Professor Ian Rivers of the British Psychological Society, Andy Higgins from PACE – London's leading LGBT health and well-being charity, and Stephen Williams, the Member of Parliament for Bristol West.

'Pride after Prejudice' is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science, a week of events across the UK celebrating the social sciences.
