The School of Applied Social Science greatly regrets to inform its partners and friends that Professor Peter Ambrose died on 22 August 2012.

Peter was a visiting professor in the school for many years. He joined SASS on retiring from a distinguished career at the University of Sussex. After being appointed as a visiting professor, Peter was also directly employed on a number of contracts, primarily to lead funded research projects, but also sometimes to teach. He made a significant contribution to research income generation in the school, especially in the lead up to the RAE 2008. Research fellows enjoyed working on projects alongside him. Peter's research fitted into the school easily, given his strong commitment to both the applied and value-driven work. He also assisted with research development at the University of Brighton Hastings campus.

Peter made a major and important contribution to a number of national campaigns to reduce poverty and to improve the availability of good quality social housing and fair rents. His dedication and enthusiasm will be missed.

His funeral takes place at the Downs Crematorium, Bear Road, Brighton on Friday 7 September 2012 at 11.15am. A book of condolence is currently open in the School of Applied Social Science Research Office, Mayfield House and the school is collecting donations for one of the charities nominated in his memory: Shelter.
