Petra Examiliotou
Psychosocial Studies MSc
I was one of the first graduates from the MSc in Psychosocial Studies (2007-2008). For the last two years I have worked as a part-time lecturer in Mediterranean College and as a researcher for PhD research. For the next six months I will be working in Egypt, in El Minya, as a project coordinator promoting the UN Millennium Development goal "education for all".
I very much enjoyed my time at the University of Brighton and in Brighton city in general. The course is quite demanding regarding the amount of reading we were expected to do, but at the same time we were supported in developing ourselves and our own ideas and not to follow blindly given theories. We covered a range of topics including feminism, narcissism, and the body, and we were provided with a different approach to analyse established theories in psychology and sociology. Our lecturers adopt a more critical and fresh way of thinking about what is 'normal' or should be expected from people in various settings (work, family, education etc) which has helped me both in my personal and my professional life. If I had to pick one moment, I think it would be every single lecture by Professor Paul Stenner, whose creative mind has enriched my way of thinking and attitude.
