Learning support

The school provides the support you will need to get the most out of your time at university, both academically and in your personal life. We encourage our students to embrace both independent (individual) and interdependent (group) learning approaches. Our learning support aims are:

  • To develop advanced study skills appropriate to higher education
  • To encourage students' self-awareness about the process of learning
  • To help students to undertake processes of self-assessment and skills development
  • To develop written and oral communication skills both on an individual level and in groups
  • To give students the tools and skills they need to become independent learners

Students' responsibilities

Over the course of the first year at university students will learn to take increasing responsibility in carrying out academic tasks independently and in maintaining and developing their academic, personal and professional skills.

However, undertaking a university course can bring pressures and demands and we provide a range of support services, including tutorials, to help you get the maximum benefit from your studies in SASS.

Administrative support

The school office in M203 coordinates the administrative support for all SASS courses. Information about timetables for lectures and exams, course documents and announcements are available on studentcentral.

Personal tutors

Every student has a personal tutor who usually remains the same throughout the degree course. Personal tutors will help, support and guide students in the development of academic, personal and professional skills; prepare references for students when applying for jobs; and will discuss matters relating to your progress on the course, in all cases respecting your confidentiality.

Support for all undergraduates

The school has a Student Support and Guidance Tutor, Gabby Barker, dedicated to helping students with any problems they may experience whilst at university. If you want to contact Gabby please see studentcentral for further details (you will need to log in).
