Shopping for Health

Master of Pharmacy students, challenged to organise a health promotion in local supermarket pharmacies as part of their course, received a very positive response from shoppers.

One group of fourth-year students went to the Lewes Road branch of Sainsburys to talk about smoking cessation; other groups gave information about head lice, osteoporosis, and ‘healthy hearts’ (this group took blood pressure readings for over 250 shoppers).

To keep the students on their toes a School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences ‘mystery shopper’ assessed each group on the quality and nature of the information given.

Module leader Dr Angela MacAdam said: “This exercise allowed students to get involved with the community and raise the profile of the university. It was designed to help prepare them for the extended roles expected from pharmacists in the future.”
