Screen Archive South East produces special events using film and music to celebrate and explore the magic lantern, early cinema and aspects of the archive’s collection. It programmed such events for Brighton Festival from 1996 to 2001 and since 2003 has co-produced CINECITY – the Brighton Film Festival. It presents moving images, both historical and contemporary, in a context that is informed by the archive’s interests in screen history.
CINECITY, an annual fourteen day film festival, is designed to present and explore the representation on film of city cultures from the late 19thC and explore the many facets of contemporary moving image culture. It is the first festival of its kind in the UK and the product of a partnership between the archive and City Screen (the UK’s largest chain of independent cinemas and the owners of the Duke of York’s, Brighton). Through screenings, presentations and discussions, CINECITY’s purpose is to present rare and new work in Brighton, engender debate on different aspects of moving image culture and stimulate the production of new work.
