Remediation: soil & water clean-up

Our geo-chemists work on a range of issues related to contaminated soils and water bodies, such as:

  • Ferric Iron Remediation and Stabilisation (FIRS)
Our team has invented and developed a patented low cost remediation system called Ferric Iron Remediation and Stabilisation (FIRS). FIRS is an electrokinetic technique using low current which has been successfully applied to the treatment of a range of contaminants including heavy metals and radio-nuclides. We are seeking licensees for FIRS both in the UK and internationally. For in-depth information on one of our latest pilot trials please see CLAIRE bulletin.
  • Dredged marine sediments - €5M EU INTERREG IVA Programme, SETARMS
This project will produce economic and environmental solutions to the use of dredged marine sediments from British and French Ports.
  • Novel water treatment technologies: NanoClean
This area is being developed in collaboration with nanotechnologists from the School of Pharmacy and Bimolecular Sciences and involves the design and development of novel nano based water clean-up devices, employing embedded nano particles to act as a bespoke filtering units.
Environmental impact assessment and air quality

Our experts offer environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for new developments and air quality assessments. They have been involved in the development of an innovative air quality alert system which uses texts to inform asthma sufferers of peak pollution days. This team also offers expertise in Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and Environmental Auditing.

Water processes and contamination

Our micro-biologists have developed a microbial source tracking (MST) technique which enables The detection of the source of faecal pollution in rivers and the sea. They are currently developing this technique with French partners via major EU Interreg funded programme. They also offer consultancy and advice on water pollution issues.

Coastal and river systems

Our hydrology and geomorphology specialists offer expertise in the pressing issues faced by costal and river areas including: sea defence, flooding, river modelling, alluvial architecture, assessment of engineering failures in large rivers and large-scale floodplain and coastal protection schemes.

Climate change / sea level change

Our geomorphologies offer advice and expertise on climate change issues such as impact of future sea level changes and assessment of climate related hazards. This can inform long term planning for local authorities, regional development agencies, environment agency etc.

Geotechnical engineering / land stability

We offer geotechnical engineering expertise to major construction or development projects on soil structure and stability and soil mechanics.

Eology & biodiversity

We offer ecological assessments; ecological landscape management; surveys / monitoring of habitat, flora and fauna and GIS decision support systems for environmental management.
