Environmental auditing / environmental management systems

We provide expert advice and help to carry out an environmental audit of your organisation. This will provide you with baseline figures on your environmental impact in the areas of energy, waste, water etc and highlight key areas where savings can be made. An environmental management system (EMS) will provide you with the framework to set realistic reduction targets and put in place an action plan on how to achieve these. Business benefits include reduced costs, enhanced reputation with customers and stakeholders and compliance with legislation. We offer a short Knowledge Transfer Partnership on EMS where companies can make use of the up to date skills and enthusiasm of a recently graduated Masters student.

Sustainable buildings

The Centre for Sustainability of the Built Environment provides expertise on many aspects of environmental impact to the construction sector, including environmentally conscious design, construction and operation of buildings and evaluation of their individual and cumulative environmental impacts. The centre provides strong research-based expertise in eco retrofit, embodied energy, bio-climatic architecture, phase change materials and indoor air quality. We also offer monitoring and modelling for sustainable buildings and the development of innovative solutions for companies wishing to develop innovative products and approaches

Waste management and recycling

Our waste management experts offer advice, support and practical research on recycling schemes, modelling and mapping ofwaste flows, increasing waste awareness. They cover the full range of waste issues: household, construction, commercial / industrial, electrical and electronic waste. They can also offer expertise on waste development of markets for household plastics, pyrolysis of shredder residue and aerobic digestion.

Energy / low carbon assessment

Our accredited energy assessors are also Low Carbon Consultants, registered with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). They can provide Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs) accompanied by a recommendation report informing you of ways to improve the energy rating of your building.

Product development centre - sustainable product design

Designing products to have the minimal environmental impact involves careful consideration of energy efficiency, materials choice, packaging, weight and distance travelled for components / materials. Carbon footprinting enables you to quantify CO2 emissions at each stage of the production cycle and to reduce impact accordingly. Our dedicated product development centre (PDC) offers computer aided design, rapid prototyping for developing items in ABS plastic direct from 3D drawings and a laser scanner for reverse engineering. Companies wishing to develop or improve their products will be offered a rapid, cost effective service by the PDC team. Our academics and students in the product design area work closely with the PDC and offer dedicated product design expertise to companies.

Materials testing and development

Our design engineers can help with the development and testing of new products including the testing of a range of materials. We have a particular track record in timber testing, providing a dedicated service to industry on structural, tensile and mechanical proprieties.
