Ways to work with us:

The university works with companies, the public sector and social enterprises in a variety of ways:

Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP)

This is an excellent way for any type of organisation to gain access to university based expertise. KTPs involve employing a graduate associate to work full time on an issue of strategic or operational importance to a company (or public/third sector organisation). The government funds up to two thirds of the cost and a KTP can last between 20 weeks and three years with the standard duration being 2 years. The outcome will typically be improved profitability, increased sales or the launch of a new product or process. Our dedicated KTP office runs 10-15 KTPs at any one time and has a 100per cent success rate in securing the funding.

Find out more on the KTP website.

Collaborative research and development / applied research

We work collaboratively with companies, the public and third sectors to carry out joint research or R&D on specific issues. The vast majority of our research is applied; it has practical applications and direct relevance to companies and society at large. Examples of this collaborative, applied research approach are: working with Nano-materials companies to develop novel water clean up devices and working with Ricardo, an engineering consultancy, to improve engine technology

Contract research

We can carry out research on behalf of a client, tailored specifically to their requirements.

Consultancy
We provide expert advice and input to clients across the range of disciplines we offer. This could involve a small one-off intervention or long term input into large-scale projects.

Testing

We can offer testing services which make use of our extensive facilities and expertise in a range of areas.

Training / CPD

Student projects

Student projects can be an excellent way for companies and other organisations to get a individual piece of work done at low cost. These can be offered across most subject areas. The client will need to provide a short brief. Timing is crucial, the project will of course need to be carried out in line with the academic timetable.

Student placements

A number of courses within the Faculty of Science and Engineering incorporate a placement year. During this period students are employed full-time in work which complements their course and is at an appropriate level. Companies and organisations gain through:

  • the input of fresh ideas and skills
  • developing links with education
  • gaining additional staff at critical times
  • students providing value for money
  • increased flexibility
