Built environment and civil engineering placements

Currently there are 16 students out on placement mostly based over the South of England but also one in Glasgow and one in the USA. Placements are very varied from working for a one-man operation, to joining companies such as Sir Robert McAlpine, Cityzen, Bouygues and Morgan Sindall in positions such as Assistant Project Manager and Assistant Surveyor. Salaries range between £10,000 and £17,000 per annum. Some placements attract extras such as books, incidental expenses, transport allowance, lodging allowance, sponsorship in Year 3, and the potential for a job on graduation.

Placement positions in recent years have also included national government, local government, Royal Palaces, Sevenoaks School, surveyors, architects, civil engineers, construction companies and manufacturers.

Working within the University's Estates department has been a fantastic experience for me for many reasons, enhancing not only my practical abilities within my chosen field of work but also my personal development throughout the year. I've been able to get involved with many different projects, each offering varied examples of construction processes, projects and aftercare. I've been in a position to lead when able, and to take on a minor works project myself. The people I have met and worked with in the Estate and Facilities Team are all exceptional, and have made my year within the department the best experience I could have hoped for.
