Six reasons to study geography, geology and environment at the University of Brighton
Excellence in teaching and support
In the 2012 National Student Survey, students gave our physical geography and environmental science courses an 88 per cent overall satisfaction rate.
All of our courses are taught by a team of dedicated, knowledgeable and approachable staff. To help you to settle into university life we provide a skills-based module to give you advice and feedback in the first year, and assign you a personal tutor for the duration of your studies.
Our courses are structured to give you the flexibility to design your own programme of study. In the final year an individual tutor will also provide expert advice and guidance as you work on your dissertation project.
Innovative and relevant
Our research-informed teaching will support you to become an independent learner, with the ability to develop and apply your knowledge in your dissertation project and future career.
With over 50 staff engaged in research, and over 40 PhD students, you will be part of an active, supportive and innovative research community.
The School of Environment and Technology has attracted over £7million of external research income in the last three years. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed that 90 per cent of research submitted by the school was of international standing.
A leading professional university
Both our Geology, and Physical Geography and Geology courses are accredited by the Geological Society of London. Graduating students will have already met some of the requirements for Chartered Geologist status.
Our courses contain UK and overseas fieldtrips, which develop your field-based skills and give you the opportunity to apply the theories that you have learned in lectures. Current destinations include Greece, North Africa, Sicily, Cyprus and South Africa.
Career-focused
Eighty-eight per cent of our Geography BSc(Hons) students were working and/or studying six months after they graduated in 2011.
We are one of only a few universities to ensure that students have a career planning agreement in place at the start of their course. We will help you to develop the professional and transferable skills required for your future career success.
All our courses include an optional work placement year. Recent work placement opportunities have included organisations such as Transport for London, the Environment Agency, Powergen and the Australian Marine Research Laboratories.
Facilities fit for the future
Our students have access to a range of laboratories and facilities which support our teaching, research and consultancy in geology, hydraulics, physical geography and environmental and public health.
In the field you will be able to use specialist equipment including an X-ray diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, electron microscope, Leica differential GPS, portable XRF spectrometer and a RDI acoustic Doppler current profiler.
Outstanding location
Brighton & Hove is Britain’s liveliest seaside city. Located to the north of Brighton city centre, facilities on the Moulsecoomb campus include two restaurants, five cafes, two banks, two Students’ Union shops and a nursery.
Our open days give you a chance to find out about our courses, to meet current students and staff and get to know the university.
