Profile

Fawzia qualified as a nurse in 1987 and a midwife in 1989. Most of her midwifery experience has been in London teaching hospitals. It is through working with diverse populations that Fawzia developed an interest in the promotion of cultural awareness.

Fawzia became interested in education whilst teaching diversity and culture as an invited visiting lecturer to student midwives and completed an MSc in Advanced Midwifery Practice in 1995 and a PGCHSCE in 2002.

Fawzia joined the university in 2003 and teaches across the pre-registration midwifery curriculum. She is interested in the assessment of practice and developed a combined global and structured OSCE assessment and grading of clinical practice for the pre-registration midwifery courses. Her current interest is around clinical decision making in the simulation setting. Fawzia recently contributed to a joint project with Monash University, Australia on the recognition of and response to midwifery emergencies in the simulation setting.

Additional roles

  • Fawzia was appointed course leader to the 18-month BSc(Hons) Midwifery course in February 2010.
