Profile
Prior to working in the Centre for Health Research (CHR), Nigel worked as a psychology lecturer and examiner in Yorkshire before completing his Ph.D. in Educational Research at Lancaster University. In 2005 he went on to work as a researcher at the Trust for the Study of Adolescence (TSA), and moved to the University of Brighton in 2007. He is a Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Scientist, and has a broad range of research interests mainly around health promotion and public health.
Recently completed research includes the European Gradient Project on reducing health inequalities and the Everywhere HIV Prevention Project. In terms of the former, the Gradient Evaluation Framework (GEF) has been developed as a European action-oriented policy tool to guide and inform technical experts in public health working at the Member State level. GEF is designed to assist those involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies that aim to reduce health inequalities and level-up the gradient in health and its social determinants among children, young people and their families.
With regards the latter, the Everywhere Project was co-funded by the EC Public Health Programme and was the first scheme to develop and pre-test HIV/STI prevention standards for 'gay' businesses that are common across eight European countries. These Everywhere Standards set out a series of actions which, if adopted, lead to the businesses to being awarded with a seal of quality which certify the businesses as being socially responsible in HIV prevention and caring for its customers' health.
