Foundation degree (FdSc)

The health and social care foundation degree is a full-time, two-year course with one day a week set aside for university attendance and two days for work-based learning with your employer.

It contains core modules in healthcare that are studied by all students and modules that are specific to your profession and the pathway that you choose. The theoretical modules are studied for one day each week at the university. In addition, the course includes work-based learning modules that are studied over two days in your workplace.

Routes

Mental health and psychosocial care
This route is designed for those working in care settings with service users who have learning disabilities, or mental health problems. Core themes on this route include respect for diversity and the protection of vulnerable people. You will develop your knowledge to support service users and your ability to work in complex multi-agency teams as advocates for service users.

Acute and critical care
This route is designed for those currently in employment within acute care settings. It acknowledges the ever-increasing specialisation of medical practice and the demands this places on all levels of staff. Through practice modules you will develop specific knowledge and skills in areas such as peri-operative care, management of medical conditions and trauma care.

Children, family and public health
This route is designed for those currently in employment in the child care or public health workforce. The programme is mapped to government policy and the learning outcomes of Every Child Matters Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for students from child care settings.

Supporting long term care
This route is designed for those currently working with patients and clients with ongoing and long-term health needs. This may include the elderly, clients with chronic health problems, and people needing support with rehabilitation.
