Practice Teacher

This module aims to prepare and develop practitioners as Practice Teachers, who will be able to facilitate, supervise and assess students according to the stage 3 outcomes of the NMC Framework Standards to support learning and assessment in practice (NMC 2008). The module engages students in developing competence in facilitating learning, assessing practice and leading education in practice.
This module runs over a period of one year, and can be accessed by those in a clinical educational role who wish to develop their skills in organising and co-ordinating learning activities for a range of students, and includes 'Signing off’ of proficiency of learners’ onto a professional register. The module also prepares practitioners to facilitate students studying for approved specialist practice qualifications (SPQ), those intending to register as a specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN), or approved advanced nursing practice (ANP) programmes.
Entry requirements
For the Masters Level 7 module (NA781), the normal entry requirements to the graduate programme apply. For the Level 6 module (NA6157), the normal entry requirements to the CPD programme apply. Students should have a minimum of two years post-registration experience, hold a specialist practice post, involving at least 10 hours of educational activity a week and should preferably have completed the mentorship module at level 6. Students must have access to a qualified Practice Teacher with Sign off status who has studied at the same academic level to complete the practical element of the module.
Aim of the module
To enable students to develop their competence and confidence in a range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies for teaching to specialist practice level in clinical practice and meet NMC (2008) Stage 3 outcomes.
Study pattern
Keynote sessions will be given where appropriate by academic staff and guest lecturers. The teaching and learning strategies utilised will include self-directed learning and engagement with blog activities, introductory lectures, experiential workshops, student-initiated activities including demonstrating presentations skills and group discussion. Five monthly Action Learning Sets will support students to present issues from practice related to teaching, assessing and leading education. Students will write three reflective patches and develop a portfolio for submission, including a final synthesis text. Tutorial support will be offered by the module team.
The facilitator (Practice Teacher with Sign off status) will assess one teaching and three 'sign off' assessments of a learners' skill and verify completion of a period of 60 hours work-related activity mapped to the NMC (2008) stage 3 outcomes.
Career opportunities
On successful completion of the Practice Teacher module, students will be prepared as NMC stage 3 Practice Teachers and be equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach students in practice to level 6/level7 depending on which level they choose to study. Students will also have the opportunity to advanced stand 60 teaching hours into the Postgraduate Certificate in Health and Social Care Education course.
