Preparation of supervisor of midwives
40 credits - level 3 or masters

This 26-week module is a preparation programme for experienced midwives who have been nominated by their peers to be considered for the role and responsibilities of a Supervisor of Midwives.

These modules will be taught together at Level 3 and Masters Level in an extensive mode, over two semesters of an academic year; usually beginning in semester 1 and finishing in semester 2 of the University of Brighton academic calendar.

The aims and learning outcomes of the modules take cognisance of the NMC competencies for supervisor of midwives as stated in the Standards for the preparation and practice of supervisor of midwives (NMC 2006a).

On successful completion of the education programme, candidates will have the qualification recorded on the NMC register. The position as a practising Supervisor of Midwives is appointed by the LSA Midwifery Officer (LSAMO).

Applicants have to demonstrate an ability to study at minimum academic Level 3. The application process will be consistent with the LSAMO guidance (LSA, 2005) and NMC recommendations (2004, 2006a) and University of Brighton guidelines Level 3 and Master module application.

• Midwives need to discuss with their supervisor of Midwives their interest, in order to be put forward for nomination through the local ballot procedure.
• If successfully nominated by peers, application forms will be sent to selected candidates by the LSA Midwifery officer.
• Places are available subject to approval by the module leader in conjunction with the LSA MO.

The university is responsible for assessing the candidate's academic suitability to register for the appropriate academic module, while the LSAMO leads on the suitability of applicants to be a supervisor of midwives. There is clear LSAMO guidance on the process for nomination, selection and appointment of student supervisor of midwives.

Students are expected to develop through theory and practice learning, a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of the NMC (2006a), competencies for a supervisor of midwives.

There is a supporting list of guided activities to assist with the gaining of experience in practice, which will enable the learning and development of competencies for practice. This will include attendance at local and regional meetings.
