Practising public health: individual to population continuum
This is a 30-credit module which runs over two semesters.
Summary
The module allows you to explore and understand the relevance of public health to specialist community public health nursing.
You will learn about the identification of determinants of health, the assessment of health need and risk, and collaborative working in response to these factors. You will also look at safeguarding children from a public health perspective.
This module uses a problem-based learning approach, which is a very rewarding approach to learning, that requires commitment from you if you are to get the most from it. You will work in small groups, taking a high level of responsibility for both your own, and your fellow group members learning. Less time is spent in the classroom than in conventional teaching methods, but there is an expectation that you spend the excess non-contact time, in group-directed study.
Assessment is carried out in theory and practice. Two practice assessment tasks, relating to an identified health need, include a taped assessment with a client, and presentation of a planned public health strategy. Your theoretical assignment (3000 words) will be an essay analysing the theory applied in this process.
