Acute care pathway
50 credits
This clinical pathway is aimed at the increasing number of practitioners who work with acutely ill patients. It will provide practitioners with the diverse skills and knowledge they require to care for the acutely ill adult in a variety of clinical settings and will enable them to deliver timely and appropriate acute care. The pathway has been designed with great flexibility to ensure that nurses will study the aspects of acute care that are pertinent to their own working environment and each student will be encouraged to select clinical modules that will be useful for their own areas of clinical practice. Each student will be able to devise their own learning package in agreement with the module leader.
Who should apply?
Any practitioner working in an acute care area who would like to individualise their own clinical pathway.
Any practitioner who is working in an acute care environment and whose learning needs are not met by the range of other clinical pathways on offer.
Professional accreditation and career opportunities
Completion of a clinical pathway will enable practitioners to develop towards enhanced career status. The majority of practitioners who undertake these pathways continue to work in the chosen area of practice after completion.
Subject areas
There are no fixed modules for this pathway and students are free to identify areas in which they wish to study and select appropriate modules following discussion with the pathway leader. Practitioners who are new to acute care nursing will be strongly encouraged to undertake the "Care of the acutely ill adult" module. This module aims to provide a foundation and an in-depth introduction to acute care delivery for nurses who have not previously studied acute care.
At the end of the pathway, each student will have developed an insight into the care needs of the acute patients in their clinical environment and an understanding of the distinct nature of acute care delivery.
Syllabus
The syllabus is not set and will be agreed individually with each student.
