Cardiology and cardiac surgery clinical pathway
60 credits
This clinical pathway is designed to develop the diverse, specialist knowledge and skills of health care practitioners working with patients with cardiac conditions within the primary care and acute care environments. Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the main cause of premature death in the UK and many patients are surviving the initial cardiac event, but requiring further investigation, intervention and continuing support for many years.
Professional accreditation
Completion of a clinical pathway will enable practitioners to develop towards enhanced career status. The majority of practitioners who undertake these pathways continue to work in the chosen area of practice after completion.
Subject areas
Students need to complete the clinical pathway of 60 credits from the choice listed. The aim of the pathway is to foster lifelong learning by encouraging practitioners to study a collection of modules pertinent to their learning needs rather than to study a pre-determined route which may not suit their clinical focus or personal interests. The choice of modules (and the number of credits) includes the following key subject areas:
- Cardiac arrhythmias - 10 credits*
- 12 lead ECG - 10 credits*
- Acute coronary syndromes - 20 credits*
- Cardiac conditions diagnosis, intervention and management - 20 credits
- Heart failure - 10 credits
- Physical assessment of the cardiac and respiratory systems - 10 credits
* indicates mandatory modules for this pathway.
Career opportunities
Previous students are now working in a variety of roles in clinical practice including; heart failure nurses, thrombolysis nurse specialists, nurse consultants and lecturers.
