Intensive care pathway
60 credits
The Intensive Care Pathway aims to enable practitioners to develop knowledge, skills, and awareness in the assessment and therapeutic management of critically ill patients. Students will be building on their past experiences acquired from working in an intensive care area thus far in order to enhance their ability to undertake proficient, evidence-based intensive care clinical practice.
The pathway may commence with any of the three intensive care modules and each module may also be taken as a stand-alone module by practitioners working in other areas besides a general intensive care unit (e.g. cardiac intensive care, post-anaesthetic recovery). Completion of the Pathway includes three mandatory modules for a total of 60 credits: Intensive Care Ventilation, Intensive Care Cardiovascular, and Intensive Care Specialities.
Professional accreditation
This clinical pathway will enable practitioners to develop towards specialist practitioner status. The majority of practitioners who undertake these pathways continue to work in the specialist area of practice after completion.
Subject areas
In addition to caring for patients with acute respiratory failure, the Intensive Care Ventilation module covers current issues in preventing hospital acquired infections, research, and evidence-based practice in intensive care.
The Intensive Care Cardiovascular module prepares students to care for patients with cardiovascular instability and also explores psychosocial care and the role of the multidisciplinary intensive care team.
The Intensive Care Specialities module includes caring for intensive care patients with gastrointestinal, renal, and neurological dysfunction. Other topics integrated into this module as related to intensive care are management, education, ethics, and end-of-life care.
Career opportunities
The Intensive Care Pathway supports critical care nurses to progress in clinical practice into roles such as a senior staff nurse, charge nurse, sister, critical care outreach nurse, and practice educator.
