Ophthalmology pathway
60 credits

This clinical pathway is designed to develop the specialist knowledge and skills of health care practitioners working with patients with ophthalmic conditions within the primary care and acute care environments. The pathway will enable learners to relate theory to practice, and work in the new ways, which are current in ophthalmology today. The management of chronic eye diseases, ophthalmic care pathways for surgery, emergency eye care and support of patients with a visual impairment will be the focus of the pathway.

Professional accreditation

Completion of a clinical pathway will enable practitioners to develop towards enhanced career status. The majority of practitioners who undertake these pathways continue to work in the chosen area of practice after completion.

Subject areas

Students can complete the clinical pathway of 60 credits or take stand alone modules at 20 credits each. The aim of the pathway is to foster lifelong learning by encouraging practitioners to study a collection of modules pertinent to their learning needs rather than to study a pre-determined route which may not suit their clinical focus or personal interests.

There are three ophthalmic modules at level three which cover each speciality within the field.

* indicates mandatory modules to complete the ophthalmic pathway

Career opportunities

The pathway, is invaluable to students working in an ophthalmic setting, and provides the knowledge and skills to care for all ophthalmic patients. To have studied the course will give students the opportunity to develop their career pathway in ophthalmology.

Health care professionals working outside ophthalmology, for example minor injury units, can benefit from the knowledge gained from the emergency module, to care for eye casualties outside the ophthalmic setting.
