Exchange student experiences
Estonia
When I got offered Estonia it came as a bit of a shock. It's not somewhere that I'd ever thought of going - the Baltic nations. Well I'm happy to say that it was a fantastic experience. Go with an open mind and you will have a blast!
Be prepared on the first day to talk to a group of first year students about your experiences studying in the UK. It's no problem as it's just talking about what you do and the group will be interested in what you have to say. It's also used as an encouragement for the Estonian students to get out and participate in the exchange programme.
Your course facilitator will show you around the hospital and introduce you to the ward where you will be based. The staff do not speak English that well and it pays to try and learn a few Estonian basics before you go.

University and accommodation
We were based on a children's unit. We used the first day to settle in, then we went exploring. Get permission to have a look around the hospital at each front desk and explain that you are student nurses. It's a university hospital and we found no problems looking around.
By meeting different people throughout the hospital, you will inevitably gain insights on the running of the establishment. You will be invited to observe operations and clinical procedures. People who speak English will normally find you. It is important to use your initiative to get the most out of this placement.

Tartu Medical School
Estonia was a great place for an exchange. I learnt a substantial amount while observing at the hospital and my non-verbal communication has come ahead in leaps and bounds. You can make this experience what you like. You can put some effort in and reap the rewards.
