International students

Why choose us?

Find out more about some of the many reasons why international students choose to study at the School of Nursing and Midwifery:

International partnerships

The school's academics have extensive and wide-ranging expertise in curriculum development and consultancy on an international scale. Currently the following projects are being funded within the school:

Academic staff are working with colleagues at the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery and Theatre Nursing at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia in a funded project from EPA (Education Partnerships in Africa) supporting the development of a new nursing curriculum at their nursing school. This will provide continuing professional development for nurses in-country and will be the first of its kind in Zambia. This is also part of the LINKS project work whereby we work with colleagues at the Brighton University Hospital Trust.

This is also supported by the Southern African Scholarship scheme based at the University of Brighton See page 20 of the June/July edition of the university's Channel magazine (pdf 3Mb)

Mental health lecturers also contribute to developments in mental health education in Sri Lanka through the following networks: the UK Sri Lanka Trauma Group and Samutthāna. This is achieved via educational consultancy and training programmes with a view to providing updated competency-based workshops for mental health care workers. This work also has the medium term aim of exploring how feasible it would be to establish a sustainable community mental health nursing educational programme.

Staff have contributed to curriculum development in Somaliland through the Tropical Health Education Trust, and in 2006 academic staff visited Libya (funded by UNESCO) to develop a new undergraduate nursing curriculum.

Staff currently actively participate within COHEHRE and are members of the Federation of International Nurse Educators (FINE). There are also members of staff who are recognised within Sigma Theta Tau.

Staff recently travelled to Shanghai, China where they met with the Minhang Health District and an associate university to discuss future partnerships. Read more about our China Exchange.

Teaching staff actively engage in various teacher exchanges within Europe and participate in cross-cultural research and international projects such as participating in developing a curriculum for improving intercultural competencies in nursing with colleagues from across Europe.
