TEP Project: Trans-Atlantic Exchange Partnerships

The International Health Development Research Centre (IHDRC) recently launched a three-year Canadian-European initiative to enhance education and training in the field of international health promotion. Funded by the European Commission's Education Audiovisual & Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) in Europe, and by the Ministry of Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD) in Canada, the Trans-Atlantic Exchange Partnerships (TEP) project seeks to create sustainable global resources for advanced study in HP, particularly regarding student exchange and curriculum development.

Building on the partnerships and outcomes that have been achieved through the CEIHPAL project (Canadian-European Initiative for Health Promotion Advanced Learning) from 2005-2008, the TEP Consortium consists of academics from four universities: Brighton and Magdeburg in Europe, and Toronto and Victoria in Canada.

The TEP consortium will pursue collaboratively the following objectives:

  • To create sustainable resources for advanced study and leadership in HP;
  • To provide opportunities for 40 advanced-level HP students to exchange across the Atlantic;
  • To promote health promotion faculty and health promotion expert exchange;
  • To develop two courses (Global Health Promotion, and Health Promotion Research) towards an international core curriculum;
  • To enhance campus-community partnerships in health promotion training and education; and
  • To explore expansion of the developing international core curriculum in HP to universities in Latin-America and Africa.

Over the next three years, the project will support ten University of Brighton graduate-level students to study in Canada for minimum periods of four months. It is intended that selected students will be able to link their programme of study (e.g. International Health Promotion MA) to a work placement or study internship in Canada.
