IHDRC wins funding to research policies tackling health inequalities

The International Health Development Research Centre (IHDRC) has obtained funding for a major research project to improve our understanding of policy interventions to reduce the gradient in health inequalities in Europe.

This three year project "Tackling the Gradient: applying public health policies to effectively reduce health inequalities amongst families and children", is funded by DG Research of the European Commission under its Framework 7 Programme. This multi-million euro project involves 34 members from 12 institutions (universities, research institutes and public health agencies) across Europe and is divided into six work packages. Work package 2 (WP2) with £330,000 funding is being led by Professor John Kenneth Davies and Dr Nigel Sheriff from IHDRC.

The overall aim of the Gradient Project is to contribute to current knowledge about effective public health policies to tackle health inequalities and to address the gradients that exist in the underlying social determinants of health. In particular, the project will examine public health policies which focus on families and children as research evidence has illustrated that inequalities experienced during childhood have negative long term effects on health and well being.
