A workshop has been helping people to think of ways to improve their health and wellbeing. The Bridge community education centre joined forces with the University of Brighton to run the scheme in east Brighton.

The event covered topics including alcohol abuse, understanding blood pressure and healthy eating and was presented by postgraduate students. Key findings from the workshop were also presented at a recent adult learning and teaching conference at the university, which featured leading national and international experts.

The workshop was part of a project funded by the university's Community University Partnership Programme.

Organisers of the health and wellbeing workshop

This collaboration involved The Bridge and students and staff from the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

The Bridge provides a wide range of courses, information and advice for learning and work. It also offers volunteering opportunities and social activities for residents in Moulsecoomb, Bevendean, Coldean, Bates Estate and the wider areas of East Brighton. Chief executive Jayne Ross said: "We were delighted to contribute toward health and wellbeing in the city.

"The 15 participants unanimously reported improved knowledge and increased motivation to address wellbeing issues.

"Currently, almost a quarter of East Brighton residents are classified as being at risk from heart disease because of obesity, so this is a key challenge for the neighbourhood.

"Due to Government cuts, however, there is still a significant challenge in sourcing funds for this work and The Bridge is actively seeking new donors and investors in the form of philanthropists and private companies."
