Eileen Nixon, a PhD student on the Clinical Academic Fellowship* and also nurse consultant HIV, Brighton and Sussex University Hospital, has co-authored an article entitled 'Facilitating nursing and midwifery research'. The article describes the engagement of clinical nurses and midwives in the research process during a trust-wide study on perceptions of infection transmission.

In 2008, the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust developed a local research strategy with the aim of increasing the research activity of nurses and midwives within the trust, supported by Professor Valerie Hall leader of the University of Brighton's Centre for Health Research (formerly Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research).

This initiative led to an important collaboration between health care providers and the Centre for Health Research in delivering the aims of the BSUH strategy group.
