Service users and carers

Frequently asked questions

Q. What is a buddy?
A. The buddy is usually a member of the lecturing staff but could also be another service user who has been involved with the school over a period of time. The buddy is there to support you with your involvement with the school. They will provide you with an 'induction pack' when you first have contact with the school and be your reference point if you have any questions.

Q. Will I be able to park on the university campus?
A. Yes, if you let us know in advance we can book a visitor's car parking space. We will need a car registration number. You will need to park in the designated 'blue bays'. The university has a parking permit scheme on its main campuses. Public transport links are good.
See details of travel directions and maps of the university sites.

Q. How will I know where to go when I arrive at the school?
A. Your 'buddy' will normally meet you on arrival at reception and accompany you to the classroom or meeting. The room allocations are listed on the flat screens or whiteboards in reception but you will need to have the title of the session to find the exact location.

Q. What if I do not understand some of the terms used by the students or staff?
A. The induction pack contains a glossary of commonly used terms in higher education and health care. Your buddy can help if a term or word is not in the glossary.

Q. What if I tell the students something wrong?
A. One reason for inviting service users and carers to become involved is to hear their stories and to understand their experience. In that sense, you are unlikely to get something wrong but your buddy will spend some time after the session to discuss how it went.

Q. When will I receive payment for my session?
A. To ensure a swift payment (up to three to four weeks) please ensure you complete the claim form and hand to your buddy or whoever supported you at the session. It will require an account number so that the university can pay in the fee.

Q. I prefer to just be paid my expenses. Is this possible?
A. Yes, but you will need to retain receipts and complete a separate claim form for expenses.

Q. Why have I been asked about my eligibility to work?
A. To comply with the law. You will be asked for proof of eligibility to work and receive payment. This is only done at the outset and you will be advised what documents to bring.
