What we do
In January 2011 we launched our strategy for the school for the next three years 2011 – 2014. The school has a long history of involving service users and carers. It now needs to reflect the increasing emphasis on involving service users and carers in healthcare education. This is a requirement of the professional bodies that regulate nurses, midwives and paramedics.
Our terms of reference are:
- To promote meaningful service user and carer involvement for student learning within the School of Nursing and Midwifery experience.
- To maintain and further develop interesting ways of involving service users and carers.
- To ensure the value and impact of service user and carer engagement is recognized across the school and wider community.
- To ensure the appropriate support is in place for all levels of involvement.
- To keep under review the membership and terms of reference.
This is what we have done so far:
Establish a representative core membership of school staff and service users and carers Our Strategy Group met at the university's Creativity Centre to devise our three-year strategy.
Find new ways to involve service users and carers Performance poet Kate Tym is working on a project with three local stroke clubs and students and staff at the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
Build on the work of the Carer/User lecturing group The SNM Carer/User Lecturing Group (CUSER) was established in 1999 to provide systematic carer/user input into the pre and post registration Mental Health Nursing programmes.
Service users and carers in midwifery education In all midwifery programmes, service user representation is actively engaged and welcomed.
The group has number of ongoing projects including:
Developing teaching resources with personal stories In this set of video clips, Nicola Langlands describes her experiences as a heart/lung transplant patient.
Developing DVDs with service users for child health Find out more about the DVD the school has created for teaching both pre-registration and post-registration students.
Developing induction information for new service users and carers to ensure their support and development Find out about one of our service users' experience of attending the Teaching in Higher Education course.
Involving service users and carers in assessment of students Watch our short video where our Mentorship Co-ordinator asks three nursing students their views on involving patients in assessment and feedback to learners.
