Profile

Ann qualified as a physiotherapist in 1973 at Coventry School of Physiotherapy. Having held a number of clinical posts in Coventry hospitals, she moved into a teaching career, completing a Certificate in Education at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1978 and completing a Diploma in Teaching Practice awarded by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1979. In 1979 Ann was awarded membership of the Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists by examination. In 1979 she took up a full time teaching appointment at Woodlands School of Physiotherapy, Birmingham.

Between 1980 and 1991 Ann worked as a Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Coventry Polytechnic. During this period Ann studied for her PhD in the field of spondylogenic low back pain, the doctorate was awarded by Coventry Polytechnic unconditionally in 1990.

In 1998 Ann was awarded a personal chair in physiotherapy by the University of Brighton and became full-time Head of the Clinical Research Centre for Health Professions at the University of Brighton. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1999 and a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy also in 1999. Later in 2004 Ann was awarded a Fellowship of MACP. She was Chair of the National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR) from 2003 to 2012. She was appointed Chair of the National Physiotherapy Research Network (NPRN) in 2004. The NPRN became the AHPRN (Allied Health Professions Research Network) in 2012 under Ann's Chairmanship. She continues to Chair the AHPRN Core Executive.

In 2011 Ann was awarded an Honours Doctorate of Science by the University of Bedfordshire.


Ann was Chair of the National Association for Educators in Practice (NAEP) from 2007 to 2012 and is now President of NAEP. She has been research lead for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy since December 2007 on a one day per week secondment.

Ann has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and has regularly presented invited papers and keynote addresses at both national and international conferences.
