Janine joined the CRC (part-time) in 2005 to develop osteopathic research. Her career background is as a practicing osteopath since 1989 and in academic research since 1978. After obtaining a PhD in medical applications of nuclear physics, she moved into epidemiological research at the Institute of Cancer Research, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Thames Cancer Registry.
In 1999 she was awarded membership of the Faculty of Public Health following her work at the Cancer Registry leading a multi-regional project measuring quality of care in collaboration with a large network of NHS breast and colorectal cancer units. She was a member of the EUROCARE Working Group, an EU funded collaboration between over 20 European cancer registries. Since 2007 she has been a member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Clinical Studies Development Group for Complementary Therapies. She is also a Trustee of the Research Council for Complementary Medicine. In 2011 she was appointed to the Council of the College of Medicine representing complementary therapies.
Since joining the CRC she has been involved in numerous projects with osteopaths and local clinicians, and was principal investigator / co-applicant on four major funded projects on osteopathic adverse events, communication of risk, patients’ expectations and standardised data collection. She is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, after serving as Associate Editor 2006-2009, and was a founder member of the National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR) serving 2005-2012. She is an adviser for the Research Ethics and Governance Committee of the Faculty of Health and Social Science, University of Brighton.
She is currently the principal investigator for the Osteopathic Patient Expectations project.
Teaching
Janine is a PhD supervisor for the University of Brighton and provides occasional lectures within the university and externally, for example for the Osteopathy Educational Institutions. She spent several years as module leader designing and developing the Research Skills Module on the B. Ost programme for the College of Osteopaths. She is research advisor to the European School of Osteopathy; and External Examiner for the Complementary Therapy degree programme in the School of Life Sciences, University of Westminster. She also gives frequent presentations and lectures to professional and lay audiences on osteopathic, naturopathic and research topics.
Research
Janine is responsible for initiating new research, winning funding and steering projects through to completion and publication. Her interests include:
- Osteopathy and complementary medicine in chronic disease, particularly chronic headache and cancer
- Research on complex interventions
- Quality of service delivery and adverse events in osteopathy
- Implementation of evidence-based practice
- Mixed methods research applied to the field of complementary medicine
