Clinical Research MRes

This research masters degree provides allied health professionals, midwives, nurses and other professionals currently working within a clinical environment with the skills and qualification needed to manage and undertake research in a clinical setting. The course is also designed to provide a platform for progression to doctoral level studies.

Clinical Research MRes aims to increase the number of allied health professionals, midwives and nurses engaged in clinical research within their field.

The course is run as part of the postgraduate programme in the School of Health Professions at Eastbourne, and is delivered in partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Due to its research focus the course has particularly strong links with the Clinical Research Centre. Students are encouraged to attend CRC research seminars and events and to use the CRC study and communal areas giving them the opportunity to network with other researchers.

Why study Clinical Research MRes?

  • Specifically designed to meet the needs of practitioners wishing to undertake clinical research.
  • The module 'Taking Research Forward in the Modern NHS' specifically addresses current issues for clinical researchers.
  • Includes a series of ethics and governance workshops designed to prepare participants to write the ethical applications required for clinical research.
  • Ideal for the practitioner who wishes to undertake research into an area of their clinical practice, but who requires training to develop and execute their research ideas.
  • Masters level clinical research training is a specified component of the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Academic Training Pathway.

Why study for a research masters (MRes) degree?

  • As a research degree, an MRes has a larger research component than MSc and MA courses, giving participants the opportunity to design and undertake a substantial piece of research.
  • Unlike MPhil, which is also a masters research degree, the MRes has some taught modules allowing the participants more opportunity for peer support.
  • Excellent preparation for progression to research study at doctoral level.

What are the main advantages of the MRes degree study pattern?

  • Designed to provide participants with a grounding in clinical research in the early part of the course, through the taught research orientated modules.
  • All taught modules are directly relevant to the proposed clinical research dissertation, allowing development of the research proposal from the start of the course.
  • The taught modules are intensive modules, each run over the course of a week. This allows participants the opportunity to meet other students, tutors and become familiar with the university environment.
  • The latter part of the course focuses on the clinical research project.
  • Designed to allow participants to undertake their research in their usual practice setting, making the research directly relevant to issues in their own clinical environment.
  • Part-time study offers the opportunity to maintain a clinical practice throughout the course; however the course is also offered full-time.
