Why study at the School of Health Professions?

Innovative and relevant

Our courses are recognised by the Health Professions Council (HPC) and other professional bodies.

We developed and awarded the first podiatry degrees in the UK and are one of only 13 institutions in the UK currently approved by the Health Professions Council to offer podiatry. Our Clinical Podiatry Unit at the Leaf Hospital has been providing a comprehensive foot health service to local patients for over 25 years.

An innovative problem-based learning approach is used in many of our courses, and research undertaken by our Clinical Research Centre informs our teaching, ensuring that courses are up-to-date, relevant and serve the needs of students and employers.

A leading professional university

Our staff are leading researchers and teachers, at the forefront of their professions:

Professor Ann Moore is currently chair of the National Physiotherapy Research Network, the National Council for Osteopathic Research and research lead for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. In June 2011 she was awarded an International Service Award for Research by the World Confederation of Physical Therapists and has also been appointed to sit on one of the panels for the national Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Professor Gaynor Sadlo is a national teaching fellow and Fellow of the College of Occupational Therapists. The latter honour is given to those recognised by the professional body for their 'exceptional contribution' to the profession.

Career focused

Our pre-registration courses offer practice placements which will give you an opportunity to gain experience of working with patients in NHS, private and social care settings.

Our graduates are highly sought after, equipped with professional and transferable skills. According to the Destination of Leavers in Higher Education survey 2009/10, 81% of physiotherapy graduates, 96% of podiatry graduates and 100% of occupational therapy graduates start a job or go into further study or training within six months.

Excellence in teaching and support

We offer the highest standards of teaching. All of our pre-registration courses received the highest rating in our most recent QAA review and our podiatry teaching is recognised as excellent by podiatry's professional body, the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

You will have a personal tutor to offer support and advice throughout your studies and most staff operate open door policy.

Facilities and campuses in outstanding locations

We are based at the university's Eastbourne campus. Eastbourne is lively, friendly and unspoilt seaside town, adjacent to South Downs. Out students undertake practice placements at locations based throughout Sussex, Kent and Surrey.

Modern facilities reflect our professional focus by enabling students to build real-world skills. We have specialist classrooms for physiotherapy practical skills, practical skills rooms for occupational therapy practice and the Leaf Hospital, a fully-staffed clinical facility offering a comprehensive podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service.

Our human movement laboratory contains state-of-the-art resources for biomechanical research. Its wide range of equipment includes a video-based motion analysis system, an electromagnetic motion tracking system, and ultrasound scanners.
