Supporting research

The PhD and Professional Doctorate students have dedicated administrators who support the two programmes. These administrators deal with any queries or anxieties the students may have about their registration, timetabling and procedures. Supervision is provided by the School of Health Professions and other staff within the Faculty of Health and Social Science and occasionally by staff from other faculties.

The School of Health Professions' ethos towards research activity is highly supportive. Research is encouraged and supported in various ways through:

  • Staff development reviews
  • Monthly research seminars
  • Two half-day and one full day workshops per year
  • Access for all academic staff to sessions supporting the Professional Doctorate programme (by arrangement with the programme Director)
  • Staff may be supported in their research activities through a small grant which is available through the small project grant scheme within the Clinical Research Centre. The support fund is accessed by written application to the Director of the centre and funding is available to support presentations at key conferences, to support small research projects, purchase small items of equipment and to buy out time for researchers
  • Members of the core research team are available to help academic staff with queries that they may have re research ethics, governance, methodological approaches, methods, statistics, computer software and publication

The staff of the School of Health Professions meet for research related workshops, presentations, seminars and lectures. Research seminars are held regularly at which students and staff can present their own research ideas and/or findings to their peers. Regular research training and development sessions are also facilitated within the Clinical Research Centre. In addition, the Clinical Research Centre hosts a research student conference on an annual basis which is attended by staff from across the faculty and at which all students registered within the Clinical Research Centre and on the Professional Doctorate programme in Health and Social Care will present. This year they were joined by other PhD students registered within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
