This session addressed the various types of reviews that are published in the field of healthcare and the distinguishing features of systematic reviews. A step-by-step guide to carrying out a systematic review was presented: from identifying a clinical problem to deciding how to present the results. Some of the challenges in practice were covered using examples from published systematic reviews. Newer methods for appraising and grading clinical research were discussed and the session concluded with a brief guide to appraising a systematic review.
